The observance emerged informally in 2020 in the wake of heightened activism following George Floyd’s murder, created by Leah Butler-Hill while working at NationalToday.com. The Black Lives Matter movement itself does not officially reference the month designation.
Introduction
June 1 marks the beginning of Black Lives Matter Month, a special time to celebrate the resilience and strength of the Black community. This month was created to recognize and honor the struggles, achievements, and accomplishments of African-Americans throughout history. It's also a time for people of all backgrounds to come together in solidarity and raise awareness about issues that disproportionately impact Black lives. So join us in paying homage to the ongoing fight for justice, equality, and freedom this June!

Why Black Lives Matter Month is Important
It brings attention to systematic racism
Black Lives Matter Month serves as an important reminder of the disproportionate amounts of violence and discrimination that black people still face in America today. By acknowledging the devastating effects of systemic racism, we can begin to take steps towards dismantling a system that has perpetuated inequality for far too long.
It amplifies black voices
Black Lives Matter Month is an opportunity to lift up and celebrate the powerful contributions that black individuals have made to society, from civil rights activists to entrepreneurs and scientists. Through acts of solidarity like donating to organizations or attending rallies, we can support these brave and courageous voices in their fight for justice.
It drives meaningful change
Although Black Lives Matter Month only lasts one month out of the year, it provides much needed motivation to continue driving longterm change in our society. During this time, we can look at where progress needs to be made and come together as a community to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
