The United Nations Department of Public Information established the observance in 2010 as part of an initiative to raise awareness of the history, culture, and achievements of the UN's six official languages. The first observance on March 20, 2010, coincided with the 40th anniversary of the predecessor to the International Organization of La Francophonie.
