Beginning of Cooperatives

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in England established the principles on which cooperatives are still operate today, setting the groundwork for future credit unions.

1852

First Credit Union Founding

Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch consolidated the learning from two pilot projects, one in Eilenburg and the other in Delitzsch into what are generally recognized as the first credit unions.

1901

Credit Unions in America

Alphonse Desjardins introduced the establishment of credit unions in North America when he helped found a credit union in Levis, Quebec, Canada.

1934

Federal Credit Union Act

The U.S. Federal Credit Union Act passed, authorizing federally chartered credit unions in the United States.

1948

First International Credit Union Day

The inaugural International Credit Union Day was celebrated, initiated by the U.S. Credit Union National Association (CUNA) to highlight the importance and impact of credit unions.

1971

World Council of Credit Unions

The World Council of Credit Unions was established to support and promote global credit union movement.
