March 23
National Tamale Day
A food observance on March 23 celebrating tamales, a traditional Mesoamerican dish made from corn masa dough filled with various ingredients, wrapped in corn husks, and steamed.
Richard Lambert
Individual Initiative
Richard Lambert, owner of Santa Barbara Tamales-To-Go, created the observance in 2014 by submitting an application with hundreds of signatures to Chase's Calendar of Events. It was first celebrated on March 23, 2015, to promote tamales year-round since no prior national day existed for them.
